What is the difference between domain names ending in .com, .net and .org?

Domain names ending in “.com” are used for registering commercial entities. Anyone in the world can register a .com. Domain names ending “.net” have historically been designated for organizations that are directly involved in Internet operations. Currently businesses are registering domain names ending in .net when their original desired name ending in .com is already registered. The top-level domain .org is used to identify miscellaneous sites and non-profit organizations.
